Department of Bioinformatics

Introduction

Bioinformatics is an emerging interdisciplinary area which brings together the recent technologies in the fields of computer science, information technology and biological sciences. The applications of Bioinformatics are far and wide. These include basic research in the fields of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and phenomics. The applications of these areas of bioinformatics are finding their way in applied research in pharmacogenomics, drug designing, clinical genomics, medicine, agriculture, food sciences, forensics, paleontology and many more emerging fields.

Bioinformatics is immense in scope and vast in applications. Keeping these perspectives under consideration, Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj University has established the Department of Bioinformatics in the year 2004 to produce skilled Bioinformatics professionals to meet challenges in the field. The department offers a semester based Masters Degree and Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Bioinformatics. There are currently 40 students registered in the MSc program and 20 students in the Advanced Post Graduate in Diploma program. Admission to the two programs is offered to students in the month of July on the basis of a University Entrance Examination.

The Bioinformatics program at UIET is highly interdisciplinary in nature and involves collaborations with several departments on the campus. These include the Institute of Biosciences and Biotechnology, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Chemistry, Department of Information Technology and the Department of Mathematics at UIET. The interdisciplinary nature of the program ensures several interesting research collaborations between the faculty and the students. The program also benefits immensely from intellectual interactions with premier institutes such as the Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Pulses Research in its vicinity.

The aim of the program is to provide the students with the state-of the-art knowledge to solve/ model complex biological processes using computational tools and extract meaningful information from the ever expanding biological sequence- structure- function data.

The Bioinformatics program at UIET strives to achieve this goal by providing students a strong background in the fields of structural biology, computational biology, proteomics and protein engineering, genomics and transcriptomics, rational drug design and molecular structure prediction and visualization with the help of dedicated faculty and the best of facilities.

Laboratories


The Department of Bioinformatics is housed on the second floor of the spacious IET-3 building of UIET. The Department offers its student well configured computer laboratories with high speed internet facility.

These computer labs are used for imparting training to model complex biological processes using computational tools and extract meaningful information from the ever expanding biological sequence- structure- function data.

Laboratory modules with online databases and softwares (both on and off- line) are designed to provide student a strong background in the fields of structural biology, computational biology, proteomics and protein engineering, genomics and transcriptomics, rational drug design and molecular structure prediction and visualization.

1. Bioinformatics/CADD laboratory :

Consists of 20 Pentium IV processors connected via LAN, Xeon Pentium 3.4 GHz Server with 1 GB RAM, Window XP professional operating system and Red Hat 9.0 Linux operating system

2. Core Bioinformatics Laboratory :

T40 Pentium IV processors, Server: Intel Xeon dual processor 3.4 GHz with 4GB RAM, 300GB HDD, Accessories as Laser Printer, Ink Jet Printer, Scanner
